Green Corridors: Components of Green Infrastructure for Sustainable Urban Planning Resilient to Climate Change - Case Study of the Cities of Maputo and Matola

Abstract

In the last two decades, the Mozambican cities have cyclically been trifled by Climate changes due to its geographic location along the coastal region bathed by the Ocean Indico and associated with the large real estate investiments allocated for the construction and expansion of access routes liking to the coast and interland, which do not integrate green corridors in the protection range, become catalysts of the devasting action of climate phenomena. This research aims to analyse how green corridors can contribute to sustanaible and resilient urban planning to climate change. In this study an exploratory survey was put into action with qualitative approach, a case of study, complemented by bibliographic review, mapping, photographic survey, observation, calculation of index trees/km linear and vegetable cover (ICV), semi-structured and unstructured interviews to the technicians of institutions dealing with territorial planning and environmental management. The research outcomes indicate that green corridors are necessary to ensure the protection ranges which can result in sustanaible urban development and resilience to the climate phenomena. The preliminary concluisions point out that the existence of fragility and failure in the process of planning and negotiation between stakeholders who opted to building access routes without integrating green corridors.
